4 Labiaplasty Myths You Should Know

There is recently an increasing popularity for the cosmetic procedure labiaplasty within women. This is basically a procedure where the labia minora or the tissue surrounding the vaginal opening and clitoris is reshaped as per the woman's requirements.

Every woman has individual labia like their individual faces and bodies. Large labia are a cause of embarrassment for some women while wearing tight clothing while some women feel discomfort because of it. Some women also work at increasing sexual sensation by removing some labia tissue.

If you opt for a labiaplasty, your cosmetic surgeon will first discuss the procedure with you while listening to your concerns and goals. While the labiaplasty will be performed to address your particular needs, in general, it helps redefine the urethral opening, reduce the labial tissue surrounding the vagina and also helps correct asymmetrical labia. Like any other cosmetic procedure, there are myths surrounding a labiaplasty, which should be clarified.

Myth no. 1: You will develop large labia with regular use of a vibrator.
Fact: Your labia size is determined at birth; you are either born with large or small labia.

Myth no. 2: The best surgeon will ensure there is no scarring after labiaplasty.
Fact: This is untrue as anytime skin is incised, there will be a scar. However with the right techniques, it is possible to reduce scar visibility.

Myth no. 3: A woman's labia can be reshaped by any gynecologist.
Fact: This is false, and a dangerous idea as labiaplasty is not taught in medical school, and is a specialty area in cosmetic surgery.

Myth no. 4: Your sexual sensation is destroyed after a labiaplasty.
Fact: This is not true as labia are not involved in sexual stimulation. At the most, you feel pain when they are stretched too much or are torn but do not in any way feel any sexual sensation.

Any other doubts you have about a labiaplasty should be cleared and eliminated during the first, personal consultation you have with your cosmetic surgeon. This is important as you need to know what you will be undergoing and facing during a labiaplasty before undergoing it.

  1. I'm interested in getting labiaplasty done because I'm really embarrassed about my labia. I know the surgery is expensive, so I was wondering if anyone knows the price range of how much a monthly payment would be? Any information about labiaplasty would be appreciated. Thanks.
